Walmart is now offering a compact, prefabricated home for just $15,900. This 19-by-20-foot 'expandable prefab house' is available for delivery via flatbed truck and requires a forklift for unloading.
The home, manufactured by Chery Industrial, a storage solutions company based in New York, includes space for a bedroom, living room, bathroom, dining area, and kitchen. However, it is sold unfurnished and without appliances.
Many Americans are turning to tiny homes as a solution to rising housing costs, which have been exacerbated by a housing shortage linked to a slowdown in construction following the 2007-09 recession. However, potential buyers should be aware that the upfront cost of this home doesn’t cover everything needed to make it livable.
In addition to the purchase price, buyers will need to secure land, build a foundation, and possibly pour concrete under the house for added stability. Additional costs include hiring a forklift to unload and purchase appliances.
In April, Amazon briefly listed the same home, which is currently unavailable on their platform. Chery Industrial also offers a product called the 'Apple Cabin,' which is priced at $20,000 and has a design reminiscent of an Apple product, such as an iPhone. This model is currently for sale on eBay.
