A newly completed housing project in Buena Vista, Colorado, has become the state’s largest residential development built with shipping containers. Comprising 16 individual units, the community officially opened in 2025 and is now serving as a model for alternative housing solutions in the United States.
Initiated by a local developer, the project was designed to provide flexible, sustainable, and affordable living spaces. Each unit is made from a repurposed 40ft high cube container and includes essential amenities such as a private bathroom, kitchen, and living area. Monthly rental rates start at approximately $1,150, offering an accessible option compared to traditional housing.
The development process took several years, involving extensive coordination with local authorities to address zoning and building code requirements. In the end, the team successfully transformed a previously unused industrial site into a modern residential area.
This project demonstrates how container-based construction can offer fast deployment, cost efficiency, and optimal land utilization, making it an ideal solution for urban housing shortages and modular living concepts.
